Join us at the Museum of the American Railroad for an Amtrak equipment display during the State Fair of Texas! Amtrak’s sleek new Texas Eagle streamliner joins the museum’s collection of vintage trains at Fair Park.
The Museum continues its long-standing partnership with Amtrak to re-introduce the benefits of rail travel to North Texas. The partnership is part of a new thrust in programming that explores the future of rail as well as the past. The Amtrak equipment display features a locomotive and two cars fresh from re-manufacture using Stimulus Funds administered through the U.S. Department of Transportation.
Visitors can sample Amtrak’s accommodations available along the Texas Eagle route between Los Angeles, San Antonio, Dallas, and Chicago. The train features a dining car and first-class sleeping car with private rooms. The train’s 4,200 horsepower diesel locomotive will also be open to museum visitors, providing a rare look at Amtrak’s state-of-the-art train operating systems.
As a companion exhibit to Amtrak, the museum also features Service & Grace amid a Class Struggle: The Story of the Pullman Porter. This exhibit explores the role of Pullman Porters at the height of rail travel, their contributions to labor, and the rise of the African American middle class.
The Museum offers a special admission rate during the Fair: $5 per adult and $2 per child. Children under the age of 3 are free! The proceeds from admissions benefit the museum’s educational programs, and continued preservation and restoration efforts.
The Museum of the American Railroad is a not-for-profit educational institution incorporated in the state of Texas in 1963. The museum is open every day during the State Fair (Sept. 30 - Oct. 23, 2011) from 10:00am—6:00pm.
