About the Museum Minimize

Founded in 1962, the Museum of the American Railroad is a not-for-profit Texas corporation dedicated to celebrating the heritage and exploring the future of railroads through historic preservation, research, and educational programming. The museum collects artifacts and archival material from the railroad industry to exhibit and interpret their significance in American life and culture. Exhibits and general programs are provided year-round.  Educational programs are available to local schools and universities through study trips, in-class programming & outreach, and online resources.

In its most ambitious project to date, the Museum closed its location in Dallas’ Fair Park to relocate its collections and operations 30 miles north to Frisco, Texas. The Frisco site is currently under construction and access to the locomotive and rolling stock collection is limited to scheduled tours. For more information on tours, please see the “Tour Information and Directions” page under the Visit tab above. Additionally, the Museum currently maintains interim offices, exhibits, and retail at the Frisco Heritage Museum located a few hundred yards north of the new, permanent site.

Frisco residents, Phil and Geda Condit, want to make sure new generations of Frisco families and visitors alike can experience the thrill of a real, live steam locomotive. That’s why the family commissioned a brand new miniature-sized working engine and donated it to the Museum of the American Railroad.

Sanders Family of North Dallas Donates Spectacular Model Train Layout
We’ve received several offers of model railroad layouts over the years, and have had to graciously turn them down due to a lack of space.  But, one came along recently that was an offer we simply couldn’t refuse.  While our long-range plans have always included a model train layout, we assumed it would be in our yet-to-be-constructed permanent building.
